Artscape Women’s Festival
August is Women’s Month and as usual Sonke has been involved in a number of events supporting and celebrating this occasion. In the first week of August, we participated in the Artscape Women’s Festival, an annual event hosted at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town. We were invited to host three events at the festival, including the important Men’s Forum. Overall, the festival explored the theme “Love Responsibly” and workshops, activities and entertainment focused on this broad topic.
Unite As One Campaign for Safety and Justice

Following the xenophobic threats, attacks and violent outbursts across the country that occurred shortly after the World Cup ended, civil society organisations joined together to launch the Unite As One Campaign. The campaign is currently underway across the country to protect and affirm the rights of refugees and migrants in South Africa. In addition to raising awareness and mobilising communities to stand against xenophobia, the campaign aims to collect one million signed pledges against xenophobia, intolerance, intimidation and violence in South Africa. The nation-wide campaign kicked off in Cape Town on Mandela Day, 18 July, and will run until African Human Rights Day on 17 October.
Sonke launches Red Card Campaign against child sexual exploitation
On 9 June 2010, just days before the launch of the World Cup, Sonke officially launched the Red Card Campaign against Child Sexual Exploitation. The campaign was activated in a number of sites across Johannesburg and the Western Cape, with additional activities taking place in Port Elizabeth. In essence, the campaign seeks to reduce children, and especially girl’s, vulnerability to sexual exploitation in South Africa and elsewhere in Southern Africa. The initiative also seeks to increase awareness regarding sexual exploitation generally and increase the ability and willingness of people to intervene to prevent and/or report it.
Social Mobilisation for Brothers for Life Campaign is intensifying
In order to spread the Brothers for Life campaign message further across South Africa, Sonke with JHHESA and other partners, has over the past two months convened workshops of organisations working with men in eight provinces. The exception was Gauteng where there were communication challenges. Sonke is working hard to bring this province on par with others. In total, 25% of the participants were women. Driving these workshops was the need to sell Brothers for Life as a vehicle for organisations and government departments to use in their own campaigns as well as create space for the consolidation of the SANAC men’s sector in all provinces.
