INTERNATIONAL AIDS CONFERENCE: Sonke Director, Dean Peacock, presented at the 17th International AIDS Conference in Vienna on male involvement in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. He was joined by colleague, Patrick Godana, who presented on Fatherhood.

SAB CAMPAIGN RETRACTED: Sonke and civil society partners have forced SAB to retract their “Grootman vs Laaijtie” advertising campaign which promoted the drinking of excessive amounts of alcohol with being a ‘real man”. Details of the complaint can be found in Sonke's press release while SABs response is outlined here

POLICY CONFERENCE: Sonke has recently hosted the MenEngage Policy Conference in Johannesburg, bringing together people from across the sub-continent to discuss why and how to advocate for changes in policy and to promote policy implementation. The Conference concluded with an agreement on the policy priorities for MenEngage Africa.

New Resources

Sonke has produced a number of new multi-media resources which are available free of charge, including:

Traditional Leaders’ Digital Stories and Facilitation Guide
Series of stories created by traditional leaders speaking about issue such as HIV, Equality and Violence against Women

Red Card Campaign Toolkit
The toolkit includes red cards, an instructional DVD, radio PSAs and other campaign materials and is available to people who complete the Red Card training


Way to Justice
Documentary on the importance of engaging men and boys in gender work. The documentary is accompanied by a discussion guide for facilitators.

Protection

This documentary explores attitudes towards condoms use in three Africa countries. It aims to stimulate discussion and debate without being didactic.
