Sexual violence in South Africa

Members of the Ambush theatre group
South Africa has one of the highest incidences of reported rape in the world. More than 54,000 rapes are reported every year - and most attacks go unreported.

Children are also the victims of this violence, with widespread child abuse. And four women are killed by their husband or boyfriend every day.

In a recent survey in the Eastern Cape, 21 per cent of men admitted to having taken part in a rape.

Two men, who've had violent relationships in the past, talk to Assignment's David Goldblatt about the way they've treated women, and how they're trying to change and persuade other men to change too.

David meets a theatre group, called Ambush, who re-enact scenes of domestic violence in public places hoping it will provoke people into taking action and taking a stand.

And he tries to find out what lies behind the epidemic of violence against women in South Africa.
